Obituary for Michael Robert Hugh Descent

Descent, Michael Robert, Queens BCom/CA
1945-2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Michael, on Sunday January 15, 2023, at the age of 78. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Kathleen Descent. Beloved husband of Mary Ellen, dedicated and loving father of Andrea (Steve) and Melissa (Jason). Cherished grandfather of Gracie Mae (“Gracie Hay”), Sam and Nick. Brother to David(Cheryl)
Michael was a professional chartered accountant who practised in the Belleville area for over 45 years.
After building their home on the water, Mike was always out fishing in the early morning hours both winter and summer.
He took extreme pride and happiness when he embraced the life of Horse Show Dad. Without question he trucked Andrea and Melissa and their horses all over Eastern Ontario, never complaining about miles or time, he loved it all. He was the greatest sideline coach, camcorder in hand capturing the moments at local fairs, regional shows and all the way to the Royal Winter Fair. At one regional show he happily boasted he came home with a $750 coffee mug and a $50 pen but many priceless memories. Mike’s commitment to giving his girls everything he could to pursue their equine dreams ultimately saw him become the Dad who traded in his fishing pole for a pitchfork.
Mike shared his love of music with Mary Ellen and his two girls spending countless hours listening to great music at concerts, festivals and at home. He was often singing along with his favourites while schooling us at the pool table.
Travelling was another passion that Mike had. He and Mary Ellen had several memorable trips south to the Caymans and the Turks and Caicos. After the travel bug hit, Mary Ellen convinced him to make the jump across the pond to his ancestral England. The highlight of the travelling days was the beautiful country of Italy where Mike became enamoured with the historic city of Florence, happily embracing the rich history, art and of course the incomparable cuisine.
The family could not have gotten through this difficult time without the support of the most dedicated compassionate one of a kind physician and incredible man, Dr John Coady.
In respect of Michael’s wishes cremation has already taken place and there will be no service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind https://www.guidedogs.ca or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
