Chartrand, Marlene (nee Stevenson)
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marlene Chartrand, on May 23, 2020 in her 82nd year. Daughter of the late Peter and Loretta Stevenson. Beloved wife of the late Arthur Chartrand, and mother to Tammy Talbot, Nicole Griffin (David), Jeffrey Chartrand (Kitty), Denise Chartrand, and Jeanette Molloy (Jim). Lovingly remembered by 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and by her siblings Millie Kiesman (Alf), Gayle Stevenson (Rod), Darlene Dick (Bob), Evelyn LaRiviere (Ed), Roy Stevenson (Olga), and predeceased by brother Rick Stevenson (Laverne). She will be greatly missed by her friends Anna Feeney, John and Irene McGinnis, and numerous friends near and far.
Marlene was born in Bosman Manitoba on May 31, 1938 into a family that grew into 7 children. Although humble, their home was full of music, and she remained active in music for her entire life. At age 16 she met Arthur Chartrand and said that she knew from that first meeting that she would marry him. In 1956 Marlene and Arthur were married and within 6 years they had 5 children. Arthur was employed in the Air Force and Marlene was often alone with the children, and she handled it with ease. They were posted to several locations in Canada including Cold Lake Alberta and Chatham New Brunswick. In 1962 he was stationed in Trenton and they settled in Belleville, ON. In January 1976 Marlene took her children to join Arthur in CFB Lahr Germany, where they lived and travelled for 4 years.
In 1980 they returned to Belleville Ontario and continued on with their lives of travel, volunteerism, friendship and family. They were active in the Lions Club, and Marlene was instrumental in bringing the Lioness Club to Belleville. She remained with them, often as president, until they merged with the Lions Club. During those years she never turned down an opportunity to help any individual, group, or our community. She was always generous of her time and finances to her those she loved, including St. Michael’s Church where she attended each Sunday for 58 years.
Marlene once described her life as a fairy tale. She said that she married the man of her dreams, had wonderful children, traveled the world, had many experiences and helped whenever she could. She will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice, her giving spirit, and her zest for life. Although her absence will be felt by many, her love of life and music lives on in her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She affected so many people in a wonderful way, which will never be forgotten.
A celebration of Life will be scheduled in the summer, with the hope that people will be able to attend at that time. The details will be announced at a later date. If desired, donations to the Gleaners Food Bank or to the charity of your choice can be made in her name.
