Obituary for Joyce Louise Gooding (Eakin)

Joyce Gooding(EAKIN) formerly of Bloomfield and Mechanicsburg, PA.

Passed away peacefully with her family at her side, at H.J. McFarland Memorial Home in Picton on December 7, 2020.

Born July 31, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Lily (McCurdy) Eakin. Beloved wife of the late S. James Gooding. Much loved Stepmother of Carolyn and her husband Wayne Miller of Bloomfield and Bob of Kingston. Proud grandma of Curtis (Kate), Jhillian (Harland), Jeffrey, Kelsey and Kara. Great grandmother of Dominick, Annabelle and the late Ethan. She is survived by her Brother in Law Frederick Bubb of Pennsylvania, United States. Joyce was preceded in death by her siblings John, Arthur, Russel, Frederick Lynn, Jean and Carol.

Joyce contributed multiple decades of her life as an outstanding librarian to the United States Army War College in Carlisle Pennsylvania. Before joining the college in 1946, she was a librarian at Northern High School in Dillsburg Pennsylvania, and Rutherford High School in Rutherford New Jersey. On October 6, 1974 she received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the United States Army for her role in establishing the military history research collection at the Carlisle Barracks. After marrying James in 1980, they happily worked together on his book publishing business, Museum Restoration Service until they both retired in 2011.

The family is very grateful and truly appreciated the exceptional care, support and compassion given by all the nurses and staff at H.J. McFarland Memorial Home. In Keeping with Joyce’s wishes, cremation arrangements have been made with a private family service to take place in Cherry Valley Cemetery at a later date.

The family would appreciate memorial donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
